MLB: San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners
The San Diego Padres are in Seattle for the 2nd game of a three game series with the Mariners. The Mariners scored three runs in the first inning on a Kyle Seager homerun and never looked back taking the first game 5-1. Being in different leagues these teams obviously don’t face each other very often but since 2012 they have met 11 times with the Padres have winning 7 of those games.
Head to Head Trends
Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
Padres are 7-4 in the last 11 meetings.
The Seattle Mariners are 3rd in the American League West 6 games back of the 1st place Oakland Athletics. The Mariners have had their struggles at home this season where they are 4 games under .500 at 16-20. Their pitching numbers are all about the same at home versus on the road but their bats really struggle at home. When playing at Safeco the Mariners are hitting .220 as a team and averaging just 3.39 runs per game compared to hitting almost .250 and averaging over 4.50 runs per game on the road. On the mound for the Mariners today is lefty Roenis Elias who is 5-5 with a 4.13 ERA in 14 starts this season.
Seattle Mariners Trends
Mariners are 2-5 in their last 7 overall.
Mariners are 17-11 versus left handed starters.
The San Diego Padres are 4th in the NL West 14 games back of the Giants and are currently in a tight battle with the Diamondbacks for last place in the National League. The Padres have the worst offense in all of baseball by a mile. They are now actually averaging under 3 runs per game at 2.99 runs per game, the next worst team would be the Red’s at 3.60 runs per game so that’s a pretty big difference. The Padres are also last in batting average at .215 and hits with just 7 hits per game so there are not many bright spots for the Padres offense. Starting for the Padres is another lefty Eric Stults who is 2-8 with a 5.78 ERA in his 14 starts this season. Stults has had a tuff time this season but especially over his last three starts where he is 0-3 with an ERA closing in on 10.
San Diego Trends
Padres are 1-7 in their last 8 overall.
Padres are 1-5 in Stults’ last 6 starts.
Padres are 3-7 in their last 10 interleague road games.
I like the Seattle Mariners to win today. The main thing I like about this game is the Padres have an absolutely pathetic offense and combine that with a starter who has an ERA close to 6 it’s going to be very hard for the Padres to put up enough runs to win.
